Colorblock mapping [30 May 2007|05:10pm]
Recently I posted about a program I wrote to map the alphabet to color representations, my thought being this representation might help dyslexics. Cap asked whether the program was usable. I was able to resurrect some old code, so if you're curious, you can list/display existing paragraphs, and add your own colorblock paragraph here (the program is a bit slow, so if you use a big paragraph, be patient):

Here's what the output looks like:

The program is clumsy. It does not break lines properly; it should only break at a space or other delimiter. Also, I'm still fooling with it, so if you use it, don't be surprised if you see inconsistent results!

Ps. There is also a little tarot-card dealer application there

Pps. Changed the 's' to orange, added blank space between the lines, now this paragraph looks like this:

Excerpt from the previously undiscovered cookbook of Jean-Paul Sartre [28 Apr 2007|01:14pm]
October 3

Spoke with Camus today about my cookbook. Though he has never actually eaten, he gave me much encouragement. I rushed home immediately to begin work. How excited I am! I begin with the omelet.

October 5

Still working on the omelet. There have been stumbling blocks. I create them, one after another, like soldiers marching into the sea, but each is empty, hollow. I want to create an omelet that expresses the meaninglessness of existence, and instead they taste like cheese. I look at them on the plate, but they do not look back. Tried eating them with the lights off. It did not help. Malraux suggested paprika.

October 6

I have realized that the traditional omelet form (eggs and cheese) is bourgeois. Today I tried making one out of a cigarette, some coffee, and four tiny stones. I fed it to Malraux, who puked. I am encouraged, but my journey is long.

October 8

Frustrated, I taped two fried eggs over my eyes and walked the streets of Paris. I ran into Camus at the Select. He called me a "pathetic dork" and told me to "go home and wash my face." Angered, I poured a bowl of bouillabaisse into his lap. He became enraged, and, seizing a straw wrapped in paper, tore off one end of the wrapper and blew through the straw, propelleing the wrapper into my eye! "Ow! You dick!" I cried. I leaped up, cursing and holding my eye, and fled.

Long live Rirkrit Tiravanija [20 Mar 2007|01:35pm]

From lord_whimsy's smart remarks here:

It was made by Space 1026, an artist collective in Philly I've been friendly with for years. It is still up at the Philly ICA--at least until Sunday. This from the show's spiel:

"Locally Localized Gravity" is both an exhibition and a program of events. Its focus is the phenomenon of artists working as producers. From running exhibition spaces to organizing music and performance events, to publishing 'zines and books, these artists do it all. The show is catalyzed by Philadelphia's artist-run scene—its abundant art schools and affordable real estate contribute to a do-it-yourself ethos—but includes artists from other cities working in a similar spirit. Their practices are social, participatory, communal, and the consequent energy created is provocative and generous. Such ways of working are often youthful, even tribal in spirit, and find artists banding together to tap into shared resources and inspiration"
